In 2002 DHI served as Construction Manager for a major addition and alteration to the existing Hospital, upgrading all mechanical, electrical, and fire suppression systems. This project included 18,500 square feet of new construction and alteration/face lift of 57,900 square feet of existing facility, in order to facilitate expansion and modification of available services and programs. Throughout the work under this contract, the entire hospital remained in operation. It was essential that disruptions and inconveniences be minimized. It was particularly important that we carefully assess the total scope of work required, define the limits of each individual component, and clearly communicate such scope and limits to all trades involved. It was also understood that, due to the nature of the work environment, portions thereof might be accessible to, or occupied by, the Owner or the public during construction. It was therefore, our responsibility to keep partially completed work safe. All work was performed in strict accordance with the owner’s Infection Disease Control policies.
In 2011 DHI completed a very successful biomass installation at the hospital. A feasibility study and cost analysis was done which ultimately supported a new power plant as well as the installation of a new biomass central boiler plant to complement the existing oil-fired plant. Our vast mechanical knowledge and years of experience working in and around Hospital environments was a huge factor in completing that project on time and with a minimal amount of inconvenience to the Weeks Hospital staff. The woodchip biomass plant went on-line in March and has produced significant energy cost savings to the facility.
